Interviewing and Selecting International Applicants

Having good job descriptions, good recruitment practices and fair, equitable and accurate assessment processes will give you the tools you need to select the best workers for the job. There are several quality resources available to employers as they prepare for the interview process.  The Employer’s Roadmap to Hiring and Retaining Internationally Trained Workers outlines the process of assessment and selection.

Assessing English Language Skills

It’s important to consider a potential employee’s language ability for the position you are seeking to fill. Different positions may require varying levels of proficiency in English.

As part of your assistnace with settlement, you should consider whether your employee will need help improving their language skills and what kind of assistance you will provide to meet that goal.  Saskatchewan Immigration offers a variety of free tools to help with an employee’s language skills – including assessments and programs like Enhanced Language Training and At Work English that can help your employee improve their English.

Assessing Work Skills and International Credentials

When hiring international workers, it is important to be able to determine whether the individuals have the necessary skills to be successful in your place of employment, but it may be difficult to assess whether credentials that are granted in a foreign country meet the standards of a Saskatchewan work place.

Many workers come to Canada with qualifications and certifications that have been achieved in their country of origin.  In order for these credentials to be certified in Canada, they must be formally assessed.  This is especially important for designated trades and regulated occupations.
