Prepare the worker for what to expect
Help your worker prepare for travel and settling in Saskatchewan before they leave their home country to ensure their experience is as smooth as possible.
Choose a travel date that works well for both the worker and you. When the worker arrives, there should be someone from your company or community that is available to meet them, who can provide a good orientation, and can take the necessary time to welcome the worker to the community and the workplace. There may be a need to assist your new employee in finding accommodations, a grocery store, appropriate transportation, and other necessities. If the worker is traveling with their family, it will be important for you to know how many family members there are, their ages and genders, and whether they have any medical, social or nutritional needs.
Be sure to give your new worker contact information for someone in your organization. In this way, they can let you know if there has been a problem or a delay during travel.
Your international worker will no doubt be curious about what your community has to offer. You can arrange to send a portfolio of information about the area in advance. Collect brochures, pamphlets and welcoming information that describes the community. Information about housing, schooling, faith communities, recreation, and special events will all help to make your new worker more aware of their surroundings when they arrive.
Newcomers can read about Saskatchewan communities by searching the websites of Saskbiz and Tourism Saskatchewan. There is also information about our province and living in Saskatchewan on this website.
When a newcomer arrives in Saskatchewan, they may not be prepared for the cold weather in winter or the hot weather in summer. Talk to your new employee about the kind of weather they can expect when they arrive in Saskatchewan. If the appropriate clothing for our weather is not available in the workers home country, you could collect the right type of clothes (jacket, hat, scarf, shoes) that the worker and his/her family will need during those first few days and weeks while they get used to the weather.
