What do I need to do to prepare to work?

Depending on the occupation, you may need to meet certain requirements before you can work in Saskatchewan.  You may need to have your qualifications and English language ability assessed or you may choose to do so.  If your occupation is regulated, you will need to be certified or licensed.

  • Important Documents

Employers, regulatory bodies, credential assessment agencies or educational institutions may ask you for documents related to your education and work experience.

  • Registration, Certification or Licensing

If your occupation is regulated, it can take time to obtain the registration, certification or licence you need to work in your occupation in Saskatchewan.  How long it takes differs from one occupation to another and with each individual situation.

  • Qualification Assessment

If you are planning to work in a regulated occupation, you will need to have your qualifications assessed.  The assessment determines whether you meet the standards for your occupation in Saskatchewan.  If you are looking for work in a non-regulated occupation, you may still find it helpful to have your qualifications assessed to show employers how your qualifications compare to Canadian qualifications.

  • English Language Requirements

To obtain employment in most skilled occupations in Saskatchewan, you will need to be able to speak, understand, read and write in English.  Immigrants who have basic communication skills in English often find they must upgrade their skills before they are able to find work.

  • Education and Training Opportunities

As you research your occupation, you may find you need to upgrade your skills to become certified or licensed to practise in Saskatchewan or to show employers that you will be able to meet their job requirements.  If you decide to work in another occupation, you may also require additional training.
