Ercoph’s Story
In 2001, Ercoph and his family immigrated to Saskatchewan from Cairo, Egypt, where they had been living as refugees from their homeland of Sudan. Today Ercoph, along with his wife and four children, makes his home in Regina, Saskatchewan.
While living in Cairo, Ercoph decided that he wanted to move his family somewhere more stable. Ercoph heard of an option that would allow him, as a refugee, to apply directly to the Canadian embassy. Without hesitation, Ercoph applied and nearly 18 months later, Ercoph and his family received their long-awaited visas. The family was finally on their way to Saskatchewan and they believe it was well worth the wait. “We love it here,” says Ercoph, “Regina offers all of the big city conveniences and still has a small town simplicity that makes it easy to enjoy life."
Since arriving in Saskatchewan, Ercoph and his family have experienced a lot of changes: two of their children were born, they’ve found new jobs (Ercoph works as an accountant), made new friends, and enjoy new local customs – like cheering for Saskatchewan’s football team, the Roughriders.

Feeling at home has been easy for Ercoph and his family. “Our kids adapted to life in Saskatchewan quite quickly,” says Ercoph, “And my wife and I feel very comfortable and at home here, too.” According to Ercoph, this is due in large part to the people of Saskatchewan. “The people here are amazing and warm, there’s a real strong sense of community where you feel supported by everyone,” notes Ercoph. The sense of community was demonstrated early on, when a fellow Sudanese family lost all of their belongings in a fire. “People rallied around the family and donated so much stuff that they ended out with more than they had before the fire,” says Ercoph. It’s this kind of love and support that has helped Ercoph and his family feel like they made the right choice when they decided to move to Saskatchewan.
Above all else, Ercoph and his wife love Saskatchewan because in his words, “It’s the absolute best place to raise your kids.” With endless opportunities for education, recreation and friends, Ercoph and his wife feel like their kids are certainly at an advantage in Regina. “It’s a friendly city, there’s so much to do; so much to see, and yet it’s small enough that you can really enjoy life,” says Ercoph, “I can work and still have time to get home and spend time with my wife and kids – and that’s always the best part of my day.”
