English Language Requirements

To obtain employment in most skilled occupations in Saskatchewan, you will need to be able to speak, understand, read and write in English.  Immigrants who have basic communication skills in English often find they must upgrade their skills before they are able to find work.

Looking for work will usually require you to do some or all of the following tasks in English:

  • Read information about jobs
  • Fill in an application form
  • Write a résumé or cover letter
  • Answer questions on the phone or in person

Once you find work, most workplaces use English as the common language.  Even people who have taken their training in English may find it difficult to understand the Canadian accent and to work exclusively in English.

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you consider your English language ability:

  • What level of English is required for my occupation?
  • What is my current level of English language ability?
  • Can I do all the things I do at home, in my life and work, in English?
  • What English language training can I get before I leave my home country?

Assessing Your English Language Skills

A number of organizations can assess your English language proficiency.  If your occupation is regulated, contact your regulatory body or professional association to find out which tests they accept before you take an assessment.

After you have had your language skills assessed, you will have a better idea of what training will best meet your needs.
