Davor’s Story
Davor immigrated to Saskatchewan from his Bosnian homeland in 2008. In just a short time he has made himself at home with two jobs and a busy social life.
With a strong desire to find out what life in North America might be like, Davor decided that Canada would make a good destination. His sister, who was already living in Saskatchewan, supported his application under the family category of the Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program. “My sister helped me through the immigration process and helped me start my life here in Saskatchewan,” Davor says. According to Davor, the application process was very smooth and moved much faster than he’d anticipated. “I was in Canada less than a year after I first applied,” says Davor. He credits the helpful staff at Saskatchewan Immigration and at Citizenship and Immigration Canada, as well as a very easy-to-use immigration website for making the application process run so smoothly. “It was quite easy to apply and if I ever had a question, the website was always very helpful or it would give me the phone number for someone who could quickly answer my questions,” says Davor.
In just over a year, Davor found two jobs, was working toward becoming licensed as a nurse and found time for a busy social life as well. “I like the night life Regina has to offer,” says Davor. Working as a cook at one of Regina’s fashionable downtown restaurants, Davor has made plenty of connections and friends. “People here are very welcoming and helpful,” says Davor, “It’s kind of like being part of one big family.” A perfect example comes from the assistance Davor received from the Saskatchewan Career and Employment Centre after his arrival. “They were so helpful in my job hunt. They taught me how to prepare my resume and thanks to them I found employment very quickly,” says Davor.
While he currently works two jobs in the food sector, Davor’s ultimate goal is to become licensed as a nurse (he received his nursing degree in Bosnia, but has to upgrade his education to practice in Canada). “Once I receive my nursing registration, I plan on getting back into the field,” says Davor.
Davor also loves the arts and, when time allows, he can often be found taking in a concert, play or any of the other cultural events occurring around the city. “I love the diverse cultures in Regina. It’s like the entire world is living in one little city,” says Davor.
Davor already knows his decision to move to Saskatchewan was a good one. “It’s been a great change in my life," says Davor, “I think anyone who is looking to make a positive change in their life should consider moving here." For Davor, the future is bright. “I feel like I have so many opportunities here. All I have to do is decide which ones to pursue.”
