Bata’s story
Batbayar “Bata” and his family emigrated from Mongolia to Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 2006.
Attracted to Saskatchewan because of a business opportunity, Bata decided to move his wife, two sons and two daughters to this small city in southern Saskatchewan.
Bata worked with the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership to learn about business opportunities in Saskatchewan. Later, he applied for nomination to the Saskatchewan Immigration Nomination Program’s entrepreneur category, which meant that he had to gather a lot of documents, including a thorough Business Plan.
“Some of the waiting was tough, but I understood that the program was very new at that time and I always had the support of immigration staff every step of the way,” says Bata. In the end, it was definitely a worthwhile process. For Bata’s family, now happily living in Swift Current, good things really do come to those who wait.

Since moving to Swift Current Bata and his family have made themselves very much at home. Bata’s warehousing business is a success and he currently leases space to AgriFoods, Culligan and Saputo Foods. In addition, Bata is currently engaged in some exciting new business opportunity talks. “It’s a real dream come true,” says Bata.
His family has also adapted quickly, which was made easier because Saskatchewan and Mongolia share many of the same qualities. “Saskatchewan and Mongolia have very similar climates and landscapes,” says Bata. But the single biggest factor in helping Bata’s family fit-in has been the people. “The people of Saskatchewan are the kindest, most down-to-earth people on the planet,” says Bata, “It’s the warmth of the people that keep you cozy during the winter.”
Bata’s children have transitioned wonderfully, are doing well in school and have made many friends. And as lovers of the outdoors, they hit the jackpot when moving to Saskatchewan. “We love camping and often go to Cypress Hills,” says Bata. In the winter months, Bata’s family plays hockey and ice skates. But what activity does his family enjoy most? “We love sailing,” says Bata, “A friend of ours got us interested. Now we go to Lake Diefenbaker all the time. It’s a beautiful place to spend time with my family.”
When asked what quality of Saskatchewan he enjoys most, Bata is quick to answer. “The opportunities here are like the skies – limitless.” For someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, a home like Saskatchewan is second-to-none. “There’s a real sea of opportunity here,” says Bata, “I couldn’t think of a better place to raise my family.”
